Jane’s June Garden Tips

Now the danger of frost has hopefully passed, plant out summer bedding into soil that has been well prepared with garden compost and some general fertilizer raked into it to aid the production of flowers. Add slow release granules to baskets and containers, (available from the hut). Give everything a good watering and continue throughout the summer. As many of these plants put on a lot of growth at this time of year and to encourage more compact bushy plant, pinch out the growing tips of shoots to the top of a leaf joint or node. As flowers fade deadhead to stop them making seed and encourage more flowers.

Now is a good time to conserve as much moisture in the soil as possible before the weather warms up. Weed thoroughly and apply a loose mulch such as bark, wood chips, home-made compost or gravel. Remember that as well as preventing evaporation mulches reduce the amount of rainwater reaching the soil; so ensure that the soil has been thoroughly soaked before application. When watering plants do so in the evening so compost or soil and plants can be fully hydrated ready for a new day. Sow biennials including wallflowers, foxgloves and honesty, continue to tie in stems of tall perennials (delphiniums) to support the developing flowers, give the soil around these clumps a generous drench of liquid feed to ensure a good show. In the fruit garden thin out new raspberry canes forming on vigorous plants of summer fruiting varieties, leave about 10-15 cm apart in the row, alongside the canes which will fruit this summer, cut away canes that appear outside the row. Gooseberries need thinning to enable them to produce larger fruits and pinch out tips of side shoots when there are 5 leaves to encourage fruiting stems to form. There is still time to sow, calibrese, french beans, salads crops, runner beans, spinach. Pinch out tips of broad beans to prevent black fly. Use netting or fleece to cover brassicas to prevent cabbage white butterflies (and pigeons) destroying them.
