Janes January Garden Tips
Most house plants need a period of rest and attention
like begonia, bougainvilleas and fuchsias. This is best done
now in the winter. Evergreens will continue to grow slowly
so keep all plants away from droughts especially on cold
windowsills. Wipe over the leaves to remove dust, leaving
the pores clean; life shine product are available but dont
press too hard - it should transform them: hairy leaved
plants like African violets should be worked over with a
soft brush. Plant out potted hyacinths and other Christmas
bulbs once they have finished flowering.
Meanwhile outside check for weeds that have germinated over
the winter, annual weeds can be put on the compost heap, but
perennial weeds should be put in the green bin. Continue
with winter digging and clear up any lingering autumn
leaves. Prune dogwoods, buddleia, roses and other shrubs
during milder weather. Finish cleaning greenhouses, pots,
trays and containers. De-clutter the shed and do any repairs
and treat the wood as necessary, get the lawn mower
serviced. Also clean out water buts inside and out, this
will give plenty of time for them to refill before water is
needed in spring and summer. Plants that have been newly
planted can dry out at the roots during long cold dry windy
weather, so make sure their roots are kept moist Cut back
foliage on hellebores to reveal flowers. Sow onions seeds in
modules and germinate in a propagator also sow sweet peas
under cover. To prepare for spring sowing cover areas of
prepared soil with polythene or fleece to allow the soil to
dry and warm up, secure firmly to the ground. Continue
feeding the birds during cold weather. Try and take part in
the RSPB bird watch on weekend of 30/31 January more details
visit.
