Summer Show Report
What a wonderful day for the Club, the Summer show broke
all recent records, 650 entries from 86 exhibitors. The
Judges were highly delighted with the standard throughout
the show. For the first time one of the exhibitors, Mr R.
Jeffery, received a special certificate for his exhibit, 3
stems of Gladioli. The Judge said he had hardly ever awarded
one of these during his judging career.
We had a record number of visitors to the show as well. It
was hard work for us all and I would like to thank the
wonderful team effort from everyone involved, in particular
Jane Campbell, Assistant Show Secretary. Tony Darbyshire's
photos of the show may be viewed on www.flick.com. They are
a lovely record of the day.
Grace Hunter, Show Secretary and Chairman
We would all like to thank you Grace for the immense
effort you put into making the Show such a success. Without
you, it just would not happen.

Janes September Garden Tips
As Autumn approaches its time to start clearing up the
garden by removing debris to prevent pests and diseases over
wintering, but try and leave a small corner untidy for
hibernating hedgehogs and beneficial insects. Pick off
diseased rose leaves of black spot or rust and dispose of
them, not forgetting any leaves that have fallen on the
ground, cut back faded rose flowers. Clear away annual
flowers keeping any seeds and then planting up with spring
bedding, primulas and wallflowers (pinch out the tips to
encourage bushier plants) which are perfect in borders and
containers or spring bulbs which will grow up through the
bedding. Give wisteria a final prune to encourage flowering
spurs, cut all side shoots back to 20cms and tie in any
leading shoots needed to extend the cover across wall or
fence. Now is the time to plant hyacinths for Christmas, use
bulb fibre which contains charcoal to stop the soil going
sour. For a good display place bulbs close together but not
touching each other or the sides, fill the container so the
tip are just showing, water and place in a cool dark place
for about 6-10 weeks. Rake over or scarify lawns to remove
excess moss and apply an autumn feed. As crops finish in the
greenhouse give it a good clean out (disconnect any
electrical equipment and cover sockets). Disinfect the
inside including paths brickwork, staging, pots and tools.
Rinse well. Check gutters and down pipes. Dig over the
vegetable patch and plant a green manure, such as field
beans, forage rye. Pick marrows and pumpkins and place in a
greenhouse to ripen before storage. Also lift undamaged root
vegetables for storage. At the end of the month lift main
crop potatoes, leave to dry before storage in paper sacks.
Plant garlic and plant out spring cabbage. Crops to sow now,
rocket, salad leaves, Winter spinach. During recent damp
summers, blight has devastated outdoor tomatoes and
potatoes, if you spot any browning or shrivelling leaves and
stems, or brown patches on fruits, get rid of every remnant,
dont compost. Burn or dustbin. Blight is airborne disease,
so it shouldnt carry over but still rotate crops.
