While autumn is a sign that the year is coming to an end, it
can also be a colourful tribute to the year that has gone
by. Walking in our beautiful Chiltern Hills is humbling and
inspiring and their autumn finery is a sight to see.
October Speaker Report
An audience of over fifty members and guests heard Mr Hilary
Newman talk to us about The Winter Garden. A very enjoyable
evening.
He proved to be an engaging speaker, with a wealth of
experience as a professional gardener and lecturer in
horticulture.
Using magnificent colour slides, he ranged widely,
explaining that over the years, with gradual climate change,
some plants could now grow outside which would not earlier
have been able to flourish. His examples included views of a
number of gardens open to the public.
He included trees, shrubs, evergreens, and alpines and
commented on the way in which botanists, over the years had
tended to change the names given to plants.
We all appreciated his humorous approach, full of
information.

Janes November Garden Tips
Continue to collect fallen leaves. If you have a rotary
mower, set the blade high it will chop up and collect the
leaves rather than cut the grass and chopped leaves break
down more quickly in the compost. Add an activator which
will speed up the process. Or, if you need to dig over the
vegetable plot, dig trenches and bury the leaves, which will
rot quickly. Alternatively, simply compost in black bin bags
punching a few air and drainage holes; moisten well before
sealing. Continue tidying borders, clearing away old stems
and dead foliage, leave a few plants like sedum, ornamental
grasses and hydrangea which look good in the frost.
When planting trees and shrubs add a slow acting fertilizer
to the planting hole, this ensures that nutrients are
available over a long period and will get the plants off to
a good start. Use bone meal or similar. Use bone meal or
similar. Many shrubs such as Dogwoods can be propagated from
hardwood cuttings over the coming months. Select stems
removing the soft tips and leaves to produce cuttings about
30cms long, push the cuttings vertically into gritty soil to
about half their depth and leave to root in a sheltered
spot.
Bring tender plants in under cover, water pot plants
sparingly and never leave standing in water.
Pick any green tomatoes to ripen further indoors. Finish
planting garlic, starting off in modules if too cold or wet.
Sow a hardy variety of broad bean (Aquadulce, Claudia, or
The Sutton) for an early crop next year and protect with
cloches.
Prune fruit canes autumn raspberries and blackberries.
Lift some roots of parsley and trim off the leaves. Pot them
up in soil-based compost and place on the kitchen window.
They will re-grow with foliage to last all winter.
