Summer Show 22nd August 2009

The Annual Summer Show: the schedule is enclosed with the Newsletter. There are not many changes, but do read sizes carefully as some have been modified. Also read the Club rules on page 14 as well as consulting the RHS Handbook at the Hut. We have dropped the organic classes and added the numbers to the Photographic Section. Please do have a go and enter as many classes as you can so that we can put on our usual interesting display. For those who have not yet dipped their toes into showing do look at the Novice classes which have not been well supported in recent years.

The Floral Art classes have been drawn up by Mrs Dibben, the judge who stepped in last year at the last minute and was keen to continue. Please give her plenty of support in these classes, and again the Novice class is not well supported but is an ideal way to start.

Cups: A reminder to 2008 Cup winners that the cups should be returned during June to the hut so that they can be cleaned and engraved ready for the Show.

Jane’s June Garden Tips

Now the danger of frost has, hopefully, passed, plant out Summer bedding into soil that has been well prepared with garden compost and some general fertilizer raked into it to aid the production of flowers. Add slow release granules to baskets and containers; also continue to feed throughout the Summer with liquid or a granular feed (containing potassium which boosts flower growth) this ensures plenty of flowers are formed. Give everything a good watering and keep well watered throughout the summer. The most beneficial time of day to water is during the evening to allow plants to take up moisture overnight. As many of these plants put on a lot of growth at this time of year and to encourage a more compact bushy plant, pinch out the growing tips of shoots to the top of a leaf joint or node. As flowers fade, deadhead to stop those making seeds and encourage more flowers. Continue staking and tying in climbers and taller growing perennials. Divide primroses, aubrietia and arabis, trimming the leaves back as you replant. Plant out runner beans providing cane support where required. Plant out tender plants, French beans, tomato, sweetcorn, courgette, pumpkins and leeks. There is also time to sow beetroot, carrots, peas, beans, lettuce, salad leaves and radish. Keep greenhouse well ventilated and damp down by splashing water around to provide moist conditions during hot weather. Start to feed tomatoes and other greenhouse crops. Cabbage white butterflies will be laying their eggs on the underside of brassica leaves, rub off the yellow eggs before you lose the crop or put fine netting over to stop the eggs being laid. Earth up potatoes to encourage more tubers to develop.

THE GARDEN HUT

If the weather is kind, June should be one of the months to be out in the garden or to make a visit to see what stocks of products are at your Garden Club Hut on any Sunday morning from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
Lawns can still be treated this month, the Hut has stocks of Evergreen Lawn Feed and Weed for your lawns; buy 2 bags to save £2 (your Gardening Club has Lawn Spreaders for Members to use foc); also Vitex Green Up lawn feed and weed and Verdone Extra weed killer for lawns.

Hut stocks include garden canes in sizes 3ft to 8ft; green canes 2ft for flowers; decorative and composted bark can be used to enhance beds and suppress weeds; For the members that want to use a good quality potting compost – Sinclair SHL Potting Growing Medium 80lt bags as used by the horticultural trade and nurseries (this item is not available at the local garden centres, gardening shops or DIY chains); Perlite and Vermiculite large and small bags (our prices are lower than the local garden centres).

NEW stocks of MOTH TRAPS and REFILLs for use on fruit trees; Slug Stoppa Copper 4m tape for putting around plant pots and Slug Defence Gel for putting on the soil around plants.

Good variety of products to control the bugs, fungus and weeds in ready to use sprays, concentrate containers or members can buy in granular form single sachet (unlike the local garden centres that sell boxes with a larger minimum quantity of sachets).
