Chalfont St Peter Garden Club Newsletter - January 2009
Chairman : Grace Hunter
Secretary : Susan Mills
Garden Hut Manager : Tony Gelder
Assistant Hut Manager : Keith Gould
Treasurer : Robert Bastin
I hope you all had a very good Christmas and New Year.
Let's hope 2009 will be a good year for gardening. 2008 was
good for some plants but not for gardeners as we all like to
sit outside and enjoy looking at the results of our hard
work.
There are some very good meetings arranged for 2009 and
some interesting outings and I hope as many of you as
possible are able to enjoy them. Do not forget the very
useful service provided by the Club at the Hut on Sunday
mornings.
With very best wishes for the coming year,
Grace Hunter, Chairman

the audio at the Hall for our Meetings? We need 1 or 2

Janes January Garden Tips
Its best to pick a dry bright day to prepare borders,
start by cutting back dead tops of perennials chop up and
compost, remove weeds, split any large clumps, replanting
the outer portions, any self-sown plants such as foxgloves
can be moved, to a more suitable place, fork over the soil
and mix in compost being careful not to dig up or squash
emerging bulbs, fill any gaps or vacant pots with primulas
that are available now in full flower. Prune buddleia, roses
and other shrubs during mild weather. Finish cleaning the
glass in the greenhouse, try to ventilate the greenhouse on
sunny days to prevent the air becoming stagnant and clean
any remaining pots, trays and containers. Also clean out
water buts inside and out, this will give plenty of time for
them to refill with water for use in the Spring and Summer.
Some salad crops, lettuce, radish, baby carrots, spinach and
salad onions can be started in the greenhouse in modules for
planting in the next few months. To prepare for spring
sowing and planting, cover areas of prepared soil with
polythene to allow the soil to dry and warm up, secure
firmly to the ground. Prepare a deep bean trench and add
kitchen peelings and other compostable waste, sprinkle in a
little soil as you go. Put plenty of mulch around the base
of fruit trees and bushes and along rows of cane fruits to
improve the soil and lock in the moisture to ensure a bumper
crop this summer.
