Report on September Meeting

Our speaker, Dr Andrew Halstead, was delayed as he had difficulty finding the hall so we altered the usual procedure and had tea and the raffle first.

However, when he arrived, he was very professional setting up his slides without fuss and proceeded to give a very interesting talk on garden pests, what symptoms to look for and how to tackle the problem. The slides were very informative and gave a very clear picture of how the plant's appearance indicated what was attacking it.

The next Meeting 15 October 2008

Jane’s October Garden Tips

To enable you to enjoy pot grown bedding plants such as fuchsias for a few more months, give them protection and warmth in a porch, greenhouse or conservatory, many will continue producing blooms until the end of the year, deadhead as usual and water as required. Tender perennials such as marguerites can be saved to provide cutting material or planted out as larger plants next year.

Cut back perennials when they have finished flowering, fork around the base, removing weed as you go, and mulch with compost to insulate the roots. Prepare ground for planting bare rooted trees and shrubs next month.

Ponds should be tidied up by removing fallen and yellowing leaves, remove blanket weed, a net can be put over to prevent future falls of leaves. As leaves fall rake up and gradually add to compost, mixing it well, add small amounts at a time where they will rot quickly to make valuable organic matter to add to the soil. Protect your compost heap from excess rain by covering it with plastic or old carpet; this retains heat to promote thorough rotting.

Plant garlic placing one clove in each hole with the tip just showing. Sow broad beans, putting some fleece over to protect from mice, they will germinate quickly and them grow slowly through the winter to produce beans in early summer.

Pot up some herbs for winter use, also pot up a few mint roots and grow on the windowsill to encourage fresh growth. Sow some salad leaves under cover to provide some fresh salad. . After clearing out old crops from the greenhouse give it a good clean.

KEITH’S COACH OUTINGS

I would like to thank all those members who supported my coach trips this year. It has been a great success, thanks to you all, and my special thanks for those kind comments (and even cards) that I have received during the year.

I have yet to finalise my list of outings for next year, but this will appear in to the November newsletter.

For now you might just like to make a note of these dates, (all Wednesdays) which will remain the same regardless of any venue changes.

We will visit four ‘National Trust’ venues and there will be a total of seven outings. The dates are:-- 22nd April; 20th May, 10th June and 24th June; 15th July, 9th September and 30th September 2009.

Again my sincere thanks – Keith Gould.
