Jane’s May Garden Tips
Everything is picking up apace, seedlings growing strongly and annual weeds popping up, remove regularly and compost.

Finish sowing annual flowers outside. Sprinkle general purpose fertiliser around clumps of spring bulbs, ensure shrubs and hedging are given the same or a rose fertiliser (now available at the hut), hoe it in, water then mulch, Any that have been newly planted need to be watered during dry periods as their roots take a time to grow and search for water. Most shrubs will be producing plenty of growth; these shoots are excellent for making softwood cuttings now and for a few months until the wood ripens. Plant up baskets and containers and let them grow on in a frost free place until the danger of frost has passed; keep compost moist and begin to give a weekly liquid feed if you have not added slow release pellets. Be sure to slowly acclimatise plants to cooler outdoor conditions. Tie in shoots of clematis (mulch around the roots to keep cool and moist to encourage stem re-root) and sweet pea as they climb. Continue to control weeds in the lawn either by using feed and weed or by treating individual weeds with a spot control, mow the lawn every week now. Prune out unwanted shoots on all raspberries. Leeks can be planted into individual holes. Sow French and runner beans in pots under cover. Plant out marrows, courgettes and squashes once the danger of frost has passed, plant into enriched soil allowing plenty of room for each plant. Outside tomatoes can also be put in position, tomatoes planted in grow bags can have a ring culture inserted to allow for extra growing space. Sow carrots and parsley thinly to avoid thinning, as the smell of crushed foliage attracts carrot root fly. Earth up potatoes as the shoots appear.
