Jane’s March Garden Tips

Summer bedding can be raised in many ways; you can grow your own from seed, which will provide a wide range of choice for the lowest price. Sow now and by June you will have achieved decent sized plants. Order seedling and plug plants to grow on to flowering size. Available from garden centre to grow on in frost-free conditions. Get ahead with baskets and containers if you have frost-free conditions in which to grow them on, until they are put out in May, use young plants or plug plants. Top dress existing containers with fresh compost
Early Spring is an ideal time to plant new perennials, check plants have strong green shoots and plant in well-prepared soil. Divide overgrown clumps of perennials replanting stronger outer portions. Stake taller growing perennials while still small. Protect new shoots from slug damage. Place a good layer of mulch on borders that have been weeded and watered to conserve moisture for later on. Prune roses now before there are too many new shoots. Prune Spring flowering shrubs after flowering. After primulas and polyanthus have finished flowering dig up clumps, trim off old foliage, and divide before replanting.

Vegetable crops to be sown now: broad beans, carrots, parsnips, beetroot, onions, salad leaves radish, leeks and brassicas. Cover with fleece to give some protection. In a heated greenhouse, propagator or on window-sill sow seeds of tomato, cucumber, chillies, peppers and aubergines. Plant out onions and shallots.
Stoke Poges Memorial Garden Open Saturday 8th March 2-5pm Entry cost £3.50 Money goes to support and enhance the garden.
