Summer Show 16 August 2008
Enclosed with this months newsletter is the Summer Show
schedule. Have a look through and plan your entries.
Encourage any friends and neighbours to enter. Not many
changes, however, we have added 2 extra classes for the
Juniors, so do encourage any Juniors you know who might be
interested in entering.
Following a request about organic grown vegetables, we
are experimenting with a couple of classes to see what
interest we receive. This is difficult to define exactly and
a lot of trust is involved. One class is for home made
compost and the other for organic vegetables. These
should be grown in normal garden soil that has been prepared
using home made compost, and or farmyard manure and
fertilised with blood fish and bone, bone meal or other
organic fertilisers. Definitely not Growmore or other
proprietary inorganic brands.
Last years cup winners are asked to return their cups to
the Hut for engraving, they will then receive a certificate
to keep with the name of the cup on it. If any cup holder
finds this difficult please contact John Warren 01753 886864

Janes June Garden Tips
Potted lilies need to be supported with canes and string
as they begin to flower and become top heavy, watch out for
the red lily beetle on the stems and under leaves and
destroy them.
Stake taller perennials as they grow. Harden off tender
bedding plants and greenhouse grown vegetables by leaving
out during the day and placing under cover at night for
several days. Once planted, they need to be kept well
watered and if possible surrounded with a mulch (home made
compost) to conserve moisture. Plants mainly take up water
by their roots so care at planting time pays dividends, if
the soil is well dug over plants will have an easier root
run and the deeper the roots go the better the plants
ability to survive dry periods, a prolonged soaking is much
better than small doses which encourages surface roots that
will dry out more easily. Water during the coolest part of
the day (evening) when evaporation is at its lowest. Once
established they should not require regular watering,
however keep watering and feeding baskets and containers.
Trim back clematis Montana after flowering if getting out of
hand. Wait to thin apples after June drop; thinning can
improve size and quality of crop and prevent good year
followed by poor ones. Hoe off any raspberries canes that
appear between rows, tie in new canes, also blackberries and
loganberries. In the greenhouse grow extra pots of basil to
attract white fly, when covered remove, they prefer basil to
tomatoes. Plant out beans, sweetcorn, courgettes and
marrows, put plenty of compost in the planting hole and
allow plenty of room between plants. Carry on sowing
beetroot, brassicas, spinach and carrots and salad crops.
Thin out rows of seedling planted earlier as congested
plants never reach their full potential.
If your compost heap looks dry water it, this speeds up the
whole process.
