Jane’s October Garden Tips

Plant up Spring bulbs, tulips can be planted later in the month. Create a crocus carpet, especially around trees and less formal parts of the garden. To make it look natural, take handfuls of corms and scatter; use a bulb planter to take out core of soil, popping the corm into the hole, replace turf and water. After flowering allow their grassy foliage to develop and refrain from mowing until end of May. Prune climbing roses cutting out old growth and tying in new. Sow sweet peas in cold frame, Autumn sown plants will produce blooms much earlier. Many plants have attractive seed heads for drying to display indoors; poppies, achillea, physalis and grasses and can be used by cutting off the seed head with plenty of stem and allowed to dry naturally. Cut back perennials. With all the garden debris being cut back at this time of year, chop the stems into small pieces or invest in a shredder, this can all be composed.

When clearing old peas and beans plants cut off the top foliage for compost and dig in the roots as they contain nitrogen which acts as a natural fertiliser. Prepare ground for planting bare rooted trees, shrubs, fruit trees and canes next month. Sow broad beans and hardy peas in shallow trenches for a crop in early summer, protect with a cloche or fleece during the winter. Remove yellow leaves from brassicas to prevent diseases spreading. Continue harvesting crops – carrots, potatoes and fruit for storage, making sure it’s clean and dry; check for signs of damage or rotting. Marrows and squash once ripened in the sun and skin hardened can be stored in a well-ventilated shed. Any tomatoes that have not succumbed to blight this year can be cut from the plant and ripened on the vine. Any cleared land can be planted with a green compost, which will be dug in later
