Janes Garden Tips:
Its time to order or visit the local garden centre and
choose bedding plants, usually in plug form for growing on
in a frost-free greenhouse, if unheated cover young plants
with fleece on cold nights. Lift and divide any clumps of
perennials, before the shoots get too large, lift and divide
snowdrops. Fork over borders to loosen surface compaction,
removing weeds as you go, add plenty of compost and sprinkle
a general fertiliser around the base of roses, shrubs trees
and hedges, to replace lost nutrients. As young shoots of
hostas and delphiniums appear protect from slugs and snails
using your preferred method. Sow carrots, radish, lettuce, brassicas, parsnips, turnips,
parsley and spinach. In shallow seed drills sprinkle multi
purpose compost along the drill to provide a buffer against
weeds and give more reliable germination. Use wider seed
drills (spade width) for peas and broad beans. Sow tomatoes,
cucumbers, peppers, chillies and aubergines if you can
provide heat for germination. Plant early potatoes and onion
sets, but with all early sowings keep an eye on the weather
and protect seedlings from heavy rain. Protect emerging
leaves of potatoes with cloches or fleece if frost is
forecast. Spike the lawn for aeration and apply a moss-
killer, start mowing on a high setting. Photographic
Competition
Once again during the Spring Show we are having a
photographic competition, similar to last years event. This
year we are having 3 classes (slightly different from last
year). Photos may be in colour or black and white. Each
class you enter should be mounted separately on paper or
card no bigger than A4. Mark the class on the back. You will
be asked to judge the entries. Class 1 - A Garden
Class 2 - Spring Flowers
Class 3 - A Landscape
Wisley You are invited on March.20th to walk the new
glasshouses. This will allow the RHS to assess the visitor
flow around the site. Admission applies but coffee is
provided. You need to arrive by 10 am. Allow 1 ½ hours for
the visit.
From the Membership Secretary Reminder to members the
subscriptions were due to be paid by the end of February.
Renewal forms are available at the hut and on the internet
or at the Wednesday meetings. The Club will allow further
renewal during March, with no Joining fee. Electronic Newsletter
14 members have indicated they are
willing to help me with the experiment of sending out
newsletters by e-mail, this is extremely helpful. I need to
have as many members as possible to make it a viable
experiment.
Please email me at agreeing to allow
me to send the newsletter by e-mail. You will still receive
the paper version while the experiment lasts and afterwards.
