The appeal of Flower Shows is that element of perfectibility. In our own gardens the weather, pests and our own limitations result in something pleasing and rewarding but usually lacking in perfection.
At these shows we see quality plant cultivation all around, new varieties, the gimmicks and masterful design. You are sure to come across plants that will convince you they will make your garden that bit more interesting or beautiful.
There are national shows and shows in village halls they are all special and worth a visit.

13 - 17 June - BBC Gardeners World Live NEC Birmingham
3 - 8 July - Hampton Court Palace Flower Show
18 – 22 July - RHS Flower Show Tatton Park Cheshire

Summer Show 18 August 2007

I hope that you have all received your Show Schedules now and that you are planning lots of entries! Please encourage our friends and neighbours to enter the show as well as visiting it. We hope to encourage more entries for the Junior classes. The entries for these are free but the entry forms must be filled in and retruned by the close of entries on the 15th August.
Last year’s cup winners are asked to return teir cups to the Hut as soon as possible, but certainly by 19th July so that they can be engraved and polished ready for the 2007 Show. If any cup holder finds this difficult please contact John Warren
Grace Hunter. Show Secretary

The Plant Sale and Swap on 16 May 2007 was a great success. There were some great bargains and a variety of plants to please all tastes. The weather was kind enough to allow display tables of plants outside the Community Centre as well as in and the atmosphere was alive with the names of plants and future plans for their cultivation.

Jane’s June Garden Tips:
After all the welcome rain we have had, weeds are becoming a problem, keep up with their removal and give a good layer of mulch to preserve the moisture. Cut down faded foliage of spring bulbs and lift if necessary to make room for summer bedding, which can be planted out after hardening off, give them a boost by watering with liquid feed. Early flowering perennials need deadheading and if you are lucky will provide a second flowering later on. Bearded iris that have become congested, need lifting and dividing now; cut leaves away to a few inches and replace healthy portions of rhizomes so they rest on the soil surface. Potted lilies need support with a few canes, also watch our for red lily beetle, picking off any adults larvae or eggs you find. Houseplants can be moved outside into the fresh air to reduce the build up of pests and diseases.

Plant tomatoes, marrows, courgettes, beans outside. Try dwarf French beans which seem to crop more consistently during hot dry summers than runner beans. Also, sow outside beetroot, carrots, thinning these out later on. Successive sowing of lettuce may be temperamental in summer, as seeds stay dormant in high temperatures; ensure success by sowing in modules. Place 2-3 seeds in each module and place in a shaded place. Thin seedlings keeping the strongest, keep moist and plant out with minimal root disturbance. Keep the greenhouse well ventilated and damped down during hot weather.
Most importantly don’t forget to enjoy your garden during the lighter evenings at this time of year.

Buyer Beware. Through the medium of this Newsletter the club is bringing to your attention, opportunities that may interest you, however, you must satisfy yourself that they meet your requirements as Chalfont St. Peter Garden Club will accept no legal, moral or financial responsibility.
