Chalfont St Peter Garden Club Newsletter - Feb 2007
Chairman: Charles Flawn
Secretary: Linda Hills-Harrop
Garden Hut Manager: Cliff Thayer
Treasurer : Robert Bastin Dear Member, We are still in need of
more Committee members, do come along to a Committee Meeting
and see how the committee works and what enjoyment you can
derive from being ‘one of the team’. We meet on the first
Tuesday evening of every month; give your Chairman a ring
for all the details.
Reminder Have you paid your subscription for 2007?
It is £5 and is excellent value. You MUST pay by end
February or you will cease being a Member. You can pay your
subscription at the HUT or at the meetings in the Church
Hall
Meetings; This month’s meeting will be at 8pm on
Wednesday 20th in the Church Hall. When we have a return
visit of Jolyon Lea to tell us about ‘Finding wild orchids
in the Chilterns’. This follows on from the excellent talk
last month on butterflies, I’m certain this will be another
enjoyable evening.
Jane’s Garden Tips
Keep winter/spring pansies, primulas and bedding plants
looking good by pinching off faded blooms; these plants tend
to flower in phases depending on temperature. There is still
time to move shrubs or plants that have outgrown their site,
divide perennials replanting healthy outer portions in fresh
sites, tidy up borders removing weeds before they take hold,
give plants a feed with a general fertiliser where
appropriate, and mulch to conserve the moisture we have had
recently. Cut down woody stems of summer flowering clematis
to a pair of fattening buds low down on each stem, feed and
mulch as they require colder roots, prune back side shoots
of wisteria to 2-3 buds, avoid cutting flowering buds. Prune
back after flowering winter shrubs, also evergreen hedges,
prune back hard buddleia and other shrubs that flower on
this year’s shoots. Plant anemone tubers3” deep in rich soil
and lily of the valley crowns so buds are just below the
soil. Finish planting roses, to help prevent black spot,
clear up and dispose of infected leaves and prunings, finish
pruning before buds open, feed and water plants regularly to
prevent stress, mulch and spray with fungicide in the
spring. Give the greenhouse a thorough clean, washing the
glass and staging; I use a weak solution of Armillatox,
(from the hut). Prepare seed beds covering with fleece or
polythene. Plan your crop rotation to ensure same crops are
not planted in the same place, this helps prevent build up
of diseases. If the soil has been covered or it is dry
enough begin to sow lettuce, radish, peas, broad beans and
beetroot. Also plant shallots they are best covered with
fleece to prevent birds pulling them out. As soon as
potatoes arrive, lay them “eyes up” in trays to sprout. Sow
greenhouse tomatoes and cucumber in a propagator or in a
heated place. . Prepare trenches for runner beans to allow
plenty of time to incorporate as much organic matter and
even torn up newspaper as possible.
RHS promotes Vegetables in 2007
www.rhs.org.uk/vegetables/BBC.asp
Grow Your Own VEG is being broadcast on BBC2 at 8.30pm on
Friday nights, it started on 5 January. Over six episodes,
Carol Klein takes novice veg growers through a gardening
year to learn how to get the best out of their space from
the RHS experts at Rosemoor and Harlow Carr. Carol
rediscovers the joys of growing organic veg for the first
time in 20 years. She also helps a first-time gardener and
her family see just how easy it is to grow their own, and
shows that whatever size your patch - from a balcony to a
suburban back garden - anyone can grow veg. Salads, roots,
brassicas and legumes are all explored with a sumptuous
harvest in every programme.
If you have missed the first programmes you can catch up
with the book Grow your own VEG is by Carol Klein and
the Royal Horticultural Society. published by Mitchell
Beazley, Price: £16.99. ISBN: 978 1 84533 293 8. It is a
lavishly illustrated, easy-to-follow, practical and
inspiring handbook on everything anyone ever needs to know
to grow vegetables, salads, and herbs all year round.
The Garden Hut will be open every Sunday from
10.00 am to 12 noon. Very important, you must show your RED
Membership card
The Hut is well stocked with all the usual branded products.
14” X 10” hanging baskets are available; I hope we can make
more use of them this year. During February and March a 10%
discount will be offered on all purchases over £20; see the
list on page 4 of all the major items we stock.
E-Mailing Newsletters
To help reduce costs, we would like to try an experiment by
sending some newsletters by E-mail, to as many members who
receive there newsletters by post. To this end would members
willing to receive newsletters by e-mail contact Richard
Fenton by e-mail on
Info@gardenclub.org.uk .
Please mark the e-mail, subject “NEWSLETTER”. The Club’s Web
Site has been hit with a large number of spam’s and I have
to filter all incoming email. This is only an experiment,
newsletters will continue to be sent out in the normal way.
We will be asking participants to fill in a questionnaire in
a couple of months to see how the experiment is working.
