Janes August Garden Tips
Now that summer soft fruit has finished producing crops it
is time to prune the plants. Blackcurrants needs the eldest
branches cut away to ground level (black or dark brown
branches) younger stems are a pale fawn colour. Remove
fruited canes of loganberries and other hybrid berries, tie
in new canes. Summer fruiting raspberries which have
produced a crop this year are also cut to ground level; tie
in the new stems, about 4-6 apart, removing weaker excess
canes. Prune back main and side shoots of gooseberries to 5
leaves to encourage it to produce fruiting stems next
season. Peg down strawberry runners from new plants into the
soil or pots of compost to root, cut down foliage to just
above the crown of each plant, clear away debris.
Continue harvesting crops regularly to ensure even cropping,
sow outside now: lettuce, Chinese and spring cabbage,
endive, radish and winter spinach. Continue pinching out
side shoots of tomatoes, water regularly and feed weekly,
pick cucumbers as they ripen to allow new flowers to develop
and pinch side shoots to just beyond a developing flower.
Lift onions with a fork and leave to ripen on the soil
before moving inside.
Clip evergreen hedges to give them time to recover and cover
themselves with new leaves before winter. Self sown seeds
from ladies mantle or nigella can be as troublesome as any
weed. After flowering, remove seed heads before they set
seed. Prune the long wispy side shoots of wisteria back to
5-6 leaves from the main framework, give a high potash feed
to improve flowering next year.
July meeting held on 18 July 2007
An appreciative audience heard Christine and Gerald
Hollingdale speak about showing vegetables and flowers. They
demonstrated their methods based on their wide experience as
gardeners, exhibitors and horticultural judges.
The Garden Hut open every Sunday 10.00am to 12 noon.
It is very important that you remember to bring your
membership card and show it when you make a purchase.
The HUT is still fairly well stocked for the quiet season,
any out of stock items can be obtained by request in a
reasonable time. We still have a few stainless steel hand
forks and trowels available at £3.85 each. The set would
make good Christmas presents.
Would the member who ordered the stainless steel digging
fork please collect ASAP
Many thanks for all your support.
