Meetings; This month’s meeting will be at 8pm on Wednesday 21st in the Church Hall when Mr.Hilary Newman will tell us about ‘The Plant Hunter’ these are the men who discovered the exotic plants from around the world many of which now adorn our gardens and give such pleasure.

OUR SUMMER SHOW - 19 AUGUST 2006
The 2006 Show Schedule accompanies this Newsletter. I hope you will support the show with lots and lots of entries, in spite, of the water difficulties. A reminder to 2005 Cup winners that the cups must be returned to the hut by mid-June to allow time for engraving. Judging by the entries in the Spring Show we hope the new photographic classes on page 12 will be popular. Important clarification: only one A4 size entry per person per class. The A4 card or paper may display more than one photo. Members of the same household, for the photographic classes only, may enter the same class, unlike rule 4 for all other classes. Grace Hunter. Show Secretary.

Jane’s Garden Tips
With water conservation in mind, make life easier in the greenhouse by covering staging with capillary matting, pots resting on a moist matting will take up water from below, reducing the need for overhead watering that may damage blooms or leaves, moist capillary matting also maintains high humidity around the plants which reduces their need for moisture. Run matting over the edge into a reservoir of water, which is kept topped up, the matting will suck up water as required, make sure pots are firmly down on matting and ensure the compost touches matting through holes in base of pot. Now the risk of frost has passed plant out summer bedding, vegetables, pots and hanging baskets (hardening off first) protect young plants from slug and snail damage. Plant out dahlias in a well-prepared site containing compost and fertiliser, as they are hungry plants, protect from slugs and stake as necessary. Continue to water and feed clumps of daffodils and tulips while foliage is still green to help them build up food resources for next year, let leaves die back naturally and cut away later this month. Look for red lily beetle (I have already found them this year) pick off and dispose. Prune away any plain shoots you find on variegated shrubs. Sprinkle fertiliser around perennials, shrubs and roses after weeding, then apply a mulch to conserve as much moisture as possible. Plant out beans, sweetcorn, courgettes and marrows, for these put plenty of compost in the planting hole and allow plenty of room between plants. Carry on planting beetroot, brassicas, salads, spinach and carrots. Tie in new shoots of cane fruits raspberries, loganberries, and blackberries. Make sure birds have plenty to drink so they don’t resort to your crops for moisture.
