Jane’s Garden Tips
Leaves seem to have fallen over a longer period this winter, so continue clearing any decaying leaves especially in borders. Continue planting bare-rooted trees, shrubs and hedging, there is still time to prune trees providing it’s not too frosty, however restricted forms of apple and pears such as cordons, espaliers and fan are pruned in late summer. Cut back leaves of hellebore as new flowers emerge, continue tidying up the herbaceous border, lifting and dividing any clumps of perennial when the soil is not frozen. Prune back wisteria to encourage flowers, aim to create a framework of well spaced horizontal branches about 1 ½ feet apart, trim back shoots to 2-3 buds from the main stem. Finish digging over the soil and when finished cover with polythene to protect from rain and allow the soil to warm up and help suppress any weeds. Several vegetables can be sown in modular trays in a heated greenhouse or propagator, try a few cauliflower, leeks and onion seeds (Kelsae) for planting out in late March. For an early crop of rhubarb cover dormant buds with straw or dry leaves inside a forcing pot or large bucket to produce tender pink stems in a few weeks time. Most house plants need a period of rest and attention like begonia, bougainvilleas and fuchsias, this will be now in the winter, evergreens will continue to grow slowly, keep all plants away from draughts especially on cold windowsills. Wipe over the leaves to remove dust, leaving the pores clean, life shine product are available, don’t press too hard, it should transform them, hairy leaved plants like African violets should be worked over with a soft brush.

Photo Competition. After our Spring Show we are going to have a photographic competition similar to last year’s successful event, this year we shall have 3 Classes: - 1.A ‘garden’; 2. A ‘Flower’; 3. A ‘Landscape’
Your snaps should be mounted on paper or card of up to A4 size max. This is a fun event and prizes will be awarded.

Garden Ideas I have read that every garden should have a sweet-smelling Buddleja davidii because they are real butterfly magnets. Particularly admired is ‘Dartmoor’, which has large, fist-like mauve flowers and ‘White Profusion’. To grow them successfully choose a sunny position and prune them back hard to the lowest shoots at the end of April.

I agree that details of my membership may be held on computer for administrative purposes only.
