Dear Member
Meetings: This months meeting will be at 8pm on
Wednesday 15th in the Church Hall when John Mattock will
talk to us about Roses
Summer Show 20th August. First a reminder that if you
haven't already handed in any cups yet, please would you
take them into the Hut as they need to be engraved before
our next show. We need them by mid-July at the latest. If
any members find difficulty with this, please phone John
Warren via the hut. Please have a look at your schedule to
see what you can enter, or what you might persuade a
neighbour, friend or young family members to enter. This is
an Open Show: anyone can enter, and remember that this is
primarily a show. Whilst we all like to get the approval
that goes with a prize sticker, or even a cup, showing
visitors what gardeners in the Chalfonts area can achieve is
the main purpose of the event. Visitors and exhibitors who
are not yet members will be able to have inclusive day
membership of the Club so as to enable them to visit the Hut
during the afternoon to see what we have to offer and buy
gardening products.
The Garden Hut will be open on Sundays from 10.00 am to 12
noon. Very important, you must show your
Membership card. Growbags are still available, please
purchase your requirements while stocks last. Remember ERIN
multipurpose compost is in stock, very good value at £3-50
per bag or 3 for £10. Also SHL the very best compost for
hanging baskets, tubs, troughs etc. This compost contains a
wetting agent. We have a few tools available including
excellent value border forks and spades at £8 each, BULLDOG
digging fork and spades at £23-50 each these are top
quality tools; also 5 ltr. sprayer at £12-50 each ( bargain

information leaflet on their special applications for
plants, including vegetables is available at the hut for
members. All listed products are in stock. Cliff Thayer
Deliverers This month, when the schedules go out is a
good time to express thanks on behalf of the Club to those
many members who volunteer to deliver our newsletters. This
is vital to the Clubs activities as our only way to reach
all on a regular basis. From time to time, we lose a
deliverer so would be grateful to hear from any volunteers,
especially if prepared to deliver other than their home
area. Bryan 01753-884007

JULYs outing is to ABBEY HOUSE, MALMSBURY,WILTSHIRE

Janes Garden Tips
Newly planted bedding plants need to be kept well watered
and if possible surrounded with a mulch (home made compost)
to conserve moisture. Plants mainly take up water by their
roots so care at planting time pays dividends, if the soil
is well dug over plants will have an easier root run and the
deeper the roots go the better the plants ability to survive
dry periods, a prolonged soaking is much better than small
doses which encourages surface roots that will dry out more
easily. Water at the coolest part of the day (usually during
the evening) when evaporation is at its lowest. Once
established they should not require regular watering,
however keep watering and feeding baskets and containers,
continue deadheading to maintain displays. Deadhead azaleas
and rhododendrons where possible and feed with the
appropriate liquid feed, (available from the hut). Prune
back shrubs after flowering- deutzia, jasmine, philadelephus,
ribes and spireas to prevent them having a lot of twiggy
wood with foliage at the end of bare branches beneath, cut
back about 1/5 of old woody growth right down to the ground
and remove dead or spindly wood, feed with a general
fertilizer. Houseplants can be moved outside into the fresh
air to reduce the build up of pests and diseases. Cut down
faded foliage of spring bulbs and lift if necessary to make
room for summer bedding. Remove duckweed and blanket weed
from ponds to prevent them clogging up water features, now
is a good time to introduce new fish. Remove suckers from
the base of trees. Prune away plain shoots on variegated
shrubs. Continue succession sowings of salad crops. Plant
outside beans, sweet corn, squash, marrow, courgette,
tomatoes, ridge cucumber, leeks and winter brassicas, these
will need protection from birds, a few CDs hung up may help
to deter them. Keep the greenhouse well watered and damp
down the floor during hot weather.

Stop Press: The May meeting was very well
attended. The subject of Our Friends and Foes in the
Garden being of much interest to gardeners. Simon Croflands
was unable to be with us, but his partner, Jane Lawler, very
ably took his place. The computer slide show illustrated
both friends and foes, together with advice on how to
attract the former and deal with the latter. In addition,
Jane had a table display of products for sale, which proved
a great attraction, from ladybird towers to bug killers.
