Dear member, Our Christmas party was a great success; Members thought the entertainment was the best for years! In January we heard Mike Brown give a brilliant talk on Clematis, we are all now much wiser on how to get the best from the wide range available.

Meetings: This month’s meeting is in the Church Hall at 8pm on February 16th when Derek Dean will talk on pelargoniums (bedding geraniums), I expect he will bring along various plants and literature. One not to miss.
Subscriptions Any member who has not paid their subscription by the end of February will have their membership lapse, and on rejoining will have to pay the £2 new member fee!

Jane’s Garden Tips
Now is a good time to sow some early vegetables for planting out under cloches or cover next month, lettuce, radish, beetroot, salad onions, peas and broad beans, can be grown in modules, they don’t need heat, but a good light place to germinate. Prepare the ground outside by covering it with cloches or polythene to protect it from rain or snow and allowing it to warm up. Chit potatoes now, each tuber has an end with lots of “eyes” while the other end is relatively “ blind”. Position the tubers in trays with the “eyes” at the top; these will form the sprouts that will eventually carry the new tubers. Place the trays in a bright cool frost- free place and once the shoots are about 1” long they are ready to plant out. If you have room try a salad variety, which produce a potato with firm waxy flesh and an intense flavour, perfect for summer salads. Continue to prune fruit trees and bushes, also winter flowering shrubs that have finished flowering including heathers. Late flowering shrubs such as buddleia, ceanothus, hardy fuchsias and lavateria can all be cut back hard, as they flower best on growth made since the spring. Towards the end of the month cut back late flowering clematis to just above a healthy bud, (about 20” from the ground). Finish cutting back old stems of herbaceous perennials. Divide and plant snow drops and winter aconites just after flowering. If you are planning to order young bedding plants by post don’t delay, as the last order can be as early as the end of Feb. It’s a good time to check fences, posts and pergolas that they are sound and secure before plants start to hide them. Also paint them with a timber preservative if there is a dry spell.
