Janes Garden Tips
A good project for this time of year is planting trees,
shrubs, roses, hedges and fruit bushes. When buying trees
make sure there is no signs of damage or disease, a smaller
tree will establish more easily than larger specimens. Dig a
hole at least 3 times the width of the root ball and deep
enough so that the ground level is at the point where the
roots flare out from the trunk. If pot grown, tease out the
roots to encourage them to spread outwards. Insert the stake
away from the roots and tie in. Fork mulch in the area
around the tree and keep well watered. Bare rooted hedge
plants and fruit bushes will also be available, on receipt
of these plants they need to be soaked in a bucket of water
for about 1 hour before planting. Prune fruit trees during
their dormant season to control shape and size, remove dead
diseased and crossing branches, take out overcrowded
branches, shorten laterals shoots to 4-6 buds to stimulate
growth of fruiting spurs. Continue digging our perennials
weeds and give borders a forking over. Dont forget to turn
pots of forced bulbs to ensure even growth. During the
winter patios, paths and steps can quickly become covered in
algae and may be slippery, wash down with a stiff brush
soaked in a solution of Armillatox or Jeyes Fluid (available
from Hut). Plant up some herbs, (mint chives and coriander)
for growing on the windowsill to provide leaves for cutting.
If you fancy growing some fresh vegetables try some
sprouting beans in a jar on the windowsill, the water needs
changing twice a day but the result is very nutritious. Look
after your garden birds by cleaning out bird feeders and
refilling with fresh seeds and nuts, look for peanuts that
are RSPB approved or BSA (Bird care Standards Association)
this means they have been tested to ensure they are free
from a fungus which produces a poison called alflatoxin,
make sure there is fresh water available. Lastly order seeds
and potatoes for next year.
Seed Orders. This is
make-up-your-mind time for what seeds you need for next
year; orders must be in to Linda by 14th December at the
very latest!
Belladonna Lily Bulbs. These bulbs have
done very well on The Isles of Scilly this year where they
have had a bumper crop. To order ring 01720-422321
